Company Story:

Electron is a London based start-up harnessing blockchain technologies to design more efficient, resilient and flexible systems for the energy sector. The company designs platforms and services enabling the industry to address the challenges and maximise the potential of new technologies such as distributed renewable generation and storage capacity, the smart grid and connected devices.  

Recognising the potential for blockchain to transform the shared virtual infrastructure of the grid, Electron are taking a top down, collaborative approach to platform development and working with various stakeholders in the energy industry.

Innovations:

  • A shared asset registration platform for energy assets, attributes and contractual relationships
  • Peer to peer market in which generation assets can pay other generation or consumers to avoid curtailment
  • Allows utilities to enter contracts with registered assets and procure active power or capacity for balancing
  • Additional markets for physical (e.g. location, response profile) or financial (e.g. local + green) attributes
  • Markets can be set up to allow buying and selling of data for analysis and services (e.g. financing, insurance)
